A Motorcyclist’s Guide to the Practice of Architecture

Presented by Tony Kemeny – Gran Associates
Monday 25th May

Attend in person (Roseville Golf Club) or join us online via Zoom.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

A talk on how and why riding a motorcycle is an appropriate metaphor for the practice of architecture.

“On a cycle… you’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.”

“Sometimes it’s a little better to travel than arrive.” – Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974)

Join us for a whimsical ride through the AACA competencies along highways and byways — with tall tales and true — arriving at the conclusion that despite all the dangers, it remains a useful and worthwhile way to travel.

Through reflections on practice, risk, judgment, craft, and the human condition, Tony Kemeny explores the parallels between riding and architecture: attentiveness, balance, intuition, responsibility, and the constant negotiation between freedom and control.

The evening will include discussions on understanding people, the enduring value of architects, and the many motivations that lead us into practice.

“In the temple of science there are many mansions … and various indeed are they that dwell therein and the motives that have led them there.” – Albert Einstein, 1918

An engaging and thoughtful evening for architects, graduates, students, and fellow travellers alike.
