ABOUT THIS EVENT

What if design began not with a building, but with a deeper understanding of place? This session explores how regenerative design shifts the focus from solving isolated problems to understanding the ecological, cultural, social, and climatic systems that shape a place. Drawing on examples from practice, research, and teaching, participants will learn methods for uncovering patterns, relationships, and opportunities that can help projects contribute to the long-term vitality, viability, and evolution of the places they inhabit.

Learning Objectives:

  • Reframe design as a relationship-building practice rather than a problem-solving exercise.
  • Understand the role of place as the foundation for regenerative action.
  • Explore methods for discovering the essence, identity, and stories of a place.
  • Identify ways projects can contribute to the long-term vitality and evolution of living systems.

Kendall Claus

Kendall Claus is a Regenerative Design Advisor with Perkins&Will / Introba, as well as a researcher, educator, and industry advocate focused on helping the built environment become a catalyst for ecological and social flourishing. Drawing on over a decade of experience across architectural practice (residential and commercial), research, and education in both the United States and Australia, her work explores how place-based and living systems thinking can strengthen relationships between people, community, and the wider living world. Through design, research, teaching, and industry leadership, she helps projects move beyond sustainability towards creating conditions for life to thrive, uncovering and realising the unique regenerative potential inherent in every place.
