Waterproofing in bathroom design and workshop

The first part of the presentation will discuss 21 critical issues to be considered in the design of bathrooms in residential buildings. The presentation will look at the changes in NCC 2022 and compare AS 3740-2010 to AS 3740-2021 design requirements.
The workshop at the end of the presentation will be an open discussion where I will present common bathroom layouts with challenging design limitations to spark debate. We will be work-shopping the correct positioning of waterstops, unenclosed showers, installation of windows in shower areas, linear drains, showers located near exits, requirements for external showers, free standing baths, laundry cabinets installed over waterproofing, polished concrete floors in wet areas and who can prepare a performance solution.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paul Ratcliff
Paul Ratcliff – Paul Ratcliff Building and Inspection Reports Pty Ltd.
In 2017 Paul established Paul Ratcliff Building and Inspection Reports Pty Ltd with a focus on building and waterproofing inspections, forensic investigation litigation and waterproofing training. He is a committee member (Past Chairman) of BD-038 Standards Committee that is tasked with reviewing the deemed to satisfy requirements for waterproofing both internal and external wet areas.
Paul has been a committee member in the revisions to Australian Standards 3740-2010, 3740-2021 and AS 4654.2-2012.
Paul was Chairman of the Master Builders Association NSW Waterproofing Technical Committee that published the following waterproofing technical manuals: ‘Guide to internal wet area waterproofing’, ‘Guide to external waterproofing balcony decks’, ‘Guide to planterbox waterproofing’ and the ‘Guide to flashings and damp-proof courses’.
In 2004 Paul was the recipient of the Master Builders Association Recognition of Service Award for development of the Master Builders Best Practice Manual ‘Guide to Internal Wet Area Waterproofing. He also received the NSW Department of Education and Training Initiative Award for participation in developing a nationally accredited training and assessment package for internal we area waterproofing. In 2024 Paul was awarded ‘Fellow of the Master Builders Association NSW Consultants Group for his contribution to the building industry.
Notable projects that Paul has provided technical advice on waterproofing include: Hyde Park Pool of Reflection, Mona Vale Hospital, Parliamentary ensuites No 1 Bligh St Sydney, Westmead Private Hospital, North Shore Hospital Birthing Centre, Multi-residential balcony refurbishment Mc Donald St Cronulla, Uniting Church Wyong Retirement Village bathroom, Bulli Hospital, Camden University, Canberra Hospital, Opal Towers, Crowne Plaza Coogee, HMAS Platypus, Arthur Boyd Art Gallery Bundanoon and North Sydney Clinic for North Shore Hospital.
